Located in New Matamoras, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug tests. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is needed, our expertise in hair testing makes us a top choice. With centers nationwide, you can have a hair test conducted in any city. Generally, 1.5-2 inches of hair from the head or body is required, and the analysis can be for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom tests.

Lately, hair follicle testing has become more prevalent in drug testing practices. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, the courts, and those on probation depend on hair tests. Its main advantage is a longer detection window of up to 90 days and it's collected via an observed procedure, making it almost foolproof. However, urine tests are best for detecting very recent drug use, within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is now recognized as an influential method to uncover drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a record for long-term alcohol and drug usage by entrapping indicators within the fibers of the burgeoning hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair offers approximately a 3-month period for alcohol and drugs detection. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (close to a #2 pencil's thickness) nearest to the scalp can yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a total of 150mg is advisable. Measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale is suggested. Should scalp hair not be available, a similar portion of body hair could be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process within the lab for deriving a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the sample is initially introduced into a lab’s processing system. This step includes checking the sample’s seal and shipping integrity, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary rapid evaluation for drug presence. While it's a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug presence in many samples, a positive screening must be validated to be legally acceptable. Samples preliminarily marked positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

For samples preliminarily positive in the Screening phase, additional hair from the original sample is extracted and prepped for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than in alternative methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is the most challenging method to carry out.

Confirming any positive screening outcome is done utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive specimens undergo cleansing prior to confirmation as deemed necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that hold a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Tampering with a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical data provision: It supplies a trend of drug usage over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier compared to other drug analysis techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
