Schedule your Hair Drug Test

Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

Located in New Pittsburg, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Specializing in hair-based drug and alcohol testing, we provide services through numerous nationwide centers ready to conduct your required testing. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary, either from the scalp or body, to facilitate analyses not just for drugs, but for alcohol/ETG and other specific testing protocols.

Over recent years, the preference for hair follicle testing has surged in the drug testing industry. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts prefer hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. These tests are integral for employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, court mandates, or probation requirements. The hair follicle test is prized for its extended detection timeline, capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days with monitored sample collection, ensuring accuracy and deterring tampering. It remains less suitable for identifying very recent use, typically within the last five days, where urine tests hold the advantage.

* You must register by phone or online to receive your donor pass/registration prior to proceeding to the testing center. You must bring a valid government issued ID along with the registration/barcode number which was sent to you by email.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging hair strand, hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other substances. Collected near the skull, hair can offer a detection window extending up to around 3 months for alcohol and other substances. It's straightforward to collect, moderately hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprised of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplemental, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. A jeweler’s scale is advised for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent volume of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in the laboratory involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a specimen into the lab's framework. This process checks that the specimen was correctly sealed and sent, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any missing data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical means to exclude drug usage in most specimens, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be legitimate in legal proceedings. Any specimens deemed presumptively positive during Screening require an additional confirmation.

If a specimen shows presumptive positivity during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than in alternative techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug analysis the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens undergo washing pre-confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceptionally hard to tamper with a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent consumption: It takes about 5-7 days for substances to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically pricier than other substance testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair pigmentation and personal variations in hair growth can influence the levels of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the assessment itself examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp
