Located in New Washington, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. If a hair or alcohol test is required, our specialists are well-versed in hair testing, with facilities across cities in the Nation available to carry out hair examinations. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are necessary. Hair assessments include detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

More frequently in the past few years, drug testing has shifted towards utilizing hair follicle assessments. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts are turning to hair drug tests over traditional urine analyses. These tests are pivotal for zero-tolerance policies, legal matters, and probationary supervision due to their extensive detection window, lasting up to 90 days, precision in observation methodology, and near-impossibility of tampering. Nonetheless, for drug usage within the past 5 days, urine testing remains superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol intake. It captures a comprehensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair's fibers. Collecting hair near the head can reveal up to a three-month timeline for alcohol and drug use. Hair sample collection is straightforward, resistant to falsification, and easy to transport.

A sample approximately 1.5 inches long, consisting of roughly 200 hairs (similar in width to a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp weighs around 100mg, which is ideal for testing. For EtG, add-ons, or tests involving more than 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferable. We recommend weighing the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar amount of body hair may be taken instead. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages of lab processing for a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. This process includes confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be considered legally valid. Samples that test positive in Screening need further confirmation through additional testing.

For samples with a positive indication during Screening, more hair is seclected from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. During this process, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to methodologies like urine or oral fluid testing, marking hair drug testing as particularly complex.

Positive results from Screening undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with positive indications receive a cleansing before Confirmation when necessary. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and ISO / IEC 17025 compliance.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests cover a shorter range.
  • Hard to tamper with: Hair drug tests are challenging to manipulate, increasing result reliability.
  • Offers usage patterns: It can show drug use trends over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Does not show recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair strands.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and person-to-person variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," the examination actually appraises the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
