Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Niles, Ohio. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, and we maintain testing centers nationwide, ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of your head; however, body hair can often be used. Hair tests allow for analysis of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized hair testing options.

In recent times, performing drug tests has more commonly involved using a hair follicle drug test. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies for drug use, courts, and individuals on probation frequently choose hair follicle drug tests. The main advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, collected with a supervised collection process, making it nearly impossible to manipulate. However, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for detecting substance use. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug ingestion by embedding biomarkers within the strands during growth. By collecting strands near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, tough to tamper with, and easy for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp gives 100mg, the optimal amount for screening and validation. For EtG, extensions, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg is preferred. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar volume of body hair may be used. References to head hair imply scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four crucial steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Validation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory system. It involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and shipped, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data required not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary swift evaluation for substance misuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly method to negate drug use in most samples, a positive result must be affirmed for legal admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptive positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Preparation. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (e.g., urine or saliva), rendering hair drug tests among the most challenging techniques.

Confirmation of any screened positive result occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples marked presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair directive and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 protocols.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a briefer detection period.
  • Resistant to manipulation: It is notably tough to falsify a hair test, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Chronological data: It can unveil a streak of drug consumption over time, not simply recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become apparent in hair approximately 5-7 days post-ingestion.
  • Expense: Hair analyses tend to be pricier than other test methodologies.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual growth rates can influence metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis inspects the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
