Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in North Fairfield, Ohio. When a hair drug or alcohol analysis is necessary, our expertise is unmatched nationwide, and with centers across all cities, we can execute the test proficiently. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or bodily hair suffices. Hair tests may detect substances, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized options.

Of late, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method for substance screening. This testing method is mandated by many employers, legal courts, and addiction specialists over the typical urine tests. Employers, courts, and probationary bodies, favoring strict anti-drug policies, use this for its significant advantage—a detection window extending up to 90 days. However, for drugs consumed in the last five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective means of identifying drug and alcohol consumption. As hair grows, it captures biomarkers within the strand, providing a long-term record of alcohol and drug use. A sample collected near the scalp offers a detection window of up to 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields around 100mg, the optimal quantity for evaluation and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels beyond 10, a specimen size of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair is a suitable alternative. The term "head hair" specifically refers to scalp hair, while "body hair" pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering a sample into the laboratory’s system. This involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and executing any supplementary data entry if an electronic chain of custody system lacks it.

Screening consists of an initial brief assessment for drugs. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples with positive screening results necessitate additional confirmation testing.

For samples with a positive result at the Screening stage, further hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. Drugs are extracted at a significantly lower concentration from hair than from other samples (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most intricate technique to conduct.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive results are washed prior to confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests offer a briefer detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests are exceptionally difficult to falsify, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage data: Hair tests trace drug usage patterns over time, rather than just recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Not effective for recent use: Drugs take 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors including hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", these tests assess the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in North Fairfield, OH, surpasses urine tests due to superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine testing can sometimes miss recent or sporadic drug use, hair testing offers a comprehensive analysis over an extended period, making it a preferred option for ensuring comprehensive and dependable results.

The unmatched advantage of hair follicle testing in North Fairfield, OH, is the extensive detection window it provides. Capable of identifying drug use over approximately 90 days, this gives employers a thorough understanding of an individual's substance consumption history—essential for informed decision-making and policy adherence.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
