Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services situated in North Industry, Ohio. If a hair drug or alcohol assessment is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with test centers available across all cities Nationwide to conduct hair analyses. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body hair is required. Hair tests are capable of being screened for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing requirements.

Recently, drug testing techniques have increasingly incorporated hair follicle assessments. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals often demand hair-based tests in lieu of traditional urine assessments. Hair follicle drug screenings benefit employers practicing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary individuals. The principal advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended drug detection window, up to 90 days, acquired through a monitored collection ensuring minimal cheating. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most reliable for identifying recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair, it provides a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and drug usage. When hair is retrieved close to the scalp, it offers an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches from approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is favored. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. References to head hair mean scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves preliminarily integrating a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not provided through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial assessment for drugs of abuse. While this method is cost-effective for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to hold up in court. Any samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

For samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The accuracy of hair drug tests is high due to the challenge of cheating them.
  • Provides historical data: They provide a pattern of drug usage over time rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is of the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
