Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Northbrook, OH. Our expertise in hair and alcohol testing spans Nationwide with centers in every city, equipped to administer these tests. To perform a test, generally 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required from the crown or body. Hair analysis can be conducted for substances, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become more prevalent in recent years. Many companies, judicial bodies, and rehabilitation experts prefer it to traditional urine testing. It meets the needs of firms enforcing strict no-drug-use policies, courts, and those on probation. Its key advantage is a lengthy detection period of up to 90 days, with an observed collection process making it nearly cheat-proof. However, for detecting recent drug use, within 5 days, urine testing remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by immobilizing biomarkers within the hair's growing strands. When collected from the scalp, hair can cover a detection period of nearly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, not easily tampered with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for testing and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyzing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is inadequate, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. Scalp hair refers specifically to head hair, while body hair denotes other types like facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The drug test result processing at the lab encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of incorporating a sample into a laboratory system. This step includes validating that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening pertains to an initial swift assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage for many samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at a notably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening exceptionally challenging to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Any samples presumptively positive are cleaned prior to confirmation as needed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the entire lab process is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are challenging to falsify, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: They reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not limited to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair within approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentrations.

Note: While referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
