Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle examinations in Northridge, Ohio. Whether for drug or alcohol testing, our expertise in hair analysis spans the nation, with facilities in every city ready to conduct these tests. A typical requirement is 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp, though body hair can be used. Our evaluations cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing needs.

In the past few years, hair follicle drug testing's popularity has surged. It's increasingly being chosen by employers, the judiciary, and addiction professionals over traditional urine screenings. Hair follicle tests align with zero-tolerance policies, serve judicial processes, and monitor probationers effectively. These tests detect drug use for up to 90 days, are supervised, and hard to tamper with. For recent drug use within five days, however, urine tests remain unmatched in accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive historical record of alcohol and drugs by securing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When clipped near the scalp, hair offers roughly a three-month detection horizon for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easily shippable.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, serving as the perfect sample for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to gather 150mg of the specimen. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing is advisable. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The process for laboratory processing of a drug test includes Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample is processed into a laboratory's framework. This step verifies the sample was adequately sealed and dispatched, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, positive results require confirmation to be valid for legal purposes. Samples testing presumptively positive in Screening indeed necessitate additional confirmation.

In cases where Screening results are presumptively positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for further Extraction. Here, substances are retrieved from hair at concentrations lower than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Positive Screening results are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptively positive undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny based on both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair drug tests reveal drug use up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It provides a usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take around 5-7 days to be noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug screening options.
  • Result variability: Hair color and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests," the examination targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
