Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing solutions in Northwood, Ohio. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol analysis using hair, our expertise is in hair specimen testing. We provide numerous testing centers nationwide that can facilitate such tests. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer tailored hair testing options.

More recently, hair follicle testing has become a preferred method for drug analysis. Numerous employers, courts, and addiction specialists now favor hair analysis over traditional urine tests. Businesses with strict no-drug-use policies, legal systems, and probation officers lean towards this method. Its main advantage lies in its extended detection timeline, up to 90 days, obtained through supervised sample collection, making it difficult to alter. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as a robust means of detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by enclosing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an estimated 3-month detection window for alcohol and various drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to alter, and easy to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising around 200 strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. Here, head hair refers strictly to scalp hair, while body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves initially processing a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes verifying the correct sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial quick assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening offers a cost-effective method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Presumptively positive samples from Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

In instances where a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Positive screening results are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can recognize drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are notably hard to deceive, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just indicating recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs generally become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing to urine testing, hair tests offer superior detection and reliability. In Northwood, OH, hair testing is favored for its unmatched accuracy, capable of identifying drug activity over an extended period. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
