Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services, Accredited Drug Testing operates in Oak Harbor, Ohio. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide. Typically, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary, either from the head or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to specific requirements.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has been increasingly preferred for drug screenings. More organizations, legal authorities, and substance abuse experts opt for this method over the conventional urine test. It's favored by employers adhering to strict drug-free protocols, judicial systems, and those on probation. The key advantage is its extended detection period, identifying drug use for up to 90 days. Although for short-term detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a potent means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The structure of hair captures biomarkers of alcohol and other drugs within the fibers of a growing hair strand, providing a comprehensive history. When cut near the scalp, hair offers an approximately 3-month detection period for alcohol and drug use. It's straightforward to gather, hard to tamper with, and convenient to mail.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the perfect amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or more than 10-panel tests, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If there's no scalp hair, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was adequately sealed and transported, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to discount drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires verification to be legitimate in legal proceedings. Samples that show potential positivity in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

Should a sample appear potentially positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at much more diluted concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcome is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing ahead of confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug testing can indicate drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that cover a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to manipulation, thereby improving accuracy.
  • Reveals historical data: It offers a pattern of drug use over an extended period, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variation in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Oak Harbor, OH, hair follicle testing offers undeniable advantages over traditional urine tests. By detecting substance use up to 90 days, hair tests provide greater accuracy and a longer detection window, while urine tests are limited to a shorter span. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
