Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Old Washington, Ohio. If you require a hair drug or alcohol examination, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities across all cities nationwide available for hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other bespoke hair testing services.

The use of hair follicle drug testing has grown in popularity recently. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, the legal system, and probation officers employ hair follicle drug testing. This method's key advantage is its extended detection range, generally up to 90 days, with oversight during collection, making tampering nearly impossible. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands provide a historical record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the continually growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the preferred sample size for screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to weigh the hair sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair may be collected. References to head hair pertain only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other categories of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four core phases in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves introducing the sample into a laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handles any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs an initial rapid evaluation for drug misuse. While cost-efficient for excluding drug use in a majority of samples, a positive screen must be validated to hold up in legal proceedings. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a specimen shows a presumptive positive in the Screening stage, extra hair is drawn from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing particularly challenging.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a more limited detection window.
  • Challenge to falsify: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Records historical usage: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur more cost than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Variation in outcomes: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing takes center stage in Old Washington, OH, due to its superior detection capabilities over urine tests. With a longer detection window, hair tests offer a comprehensive overview of drug use patterns, ensuring that no substances go unnoticed. While urine tests serve their purpose, hair testing steps ahead, delivering reliability and depth that urine analysis cannot match, safeguarding workplaces with greater certainty.

Extended Detection Window

One of the significant advantages of hair follicle testing over traditional methods is its extended detection window. In Old Washington, OH, this means that substance use can be traced back up to 90 days. Employers benefit from this extensive timeframe, gaining insights into an individual’s long-term substance habits rather than just recent activity. Such comprehensive data supports informed decision-making in the workplace.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
