Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Olena, Ohio. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair analysis, with testing centers located in cities nationwide capable of conducting a hair test. You should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head, or hair from your body may be used in numerous cases. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide custom hair test options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for conducting drug testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are favoring a hair drug test over a conventional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and probation officers are using hair follicle drug tests. A primary benefit is the extended detection window for drug use, typically up to 90 days. This method involves an observed collection process and is nearly foolproof. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most dependable.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of developing hair strands, hair serves as an extended history of alcohol and drug usage. When sampled near the scalp, it can offer up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising roughly 200 strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) taken nearest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for measuring the sample. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. Our reference to head hair strictly means scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s system. This step involves confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry that an electronic chain of custody system doesn't provide.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for identifying drugs of abuse. While Screening offers an economical way to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positives in Screening require further confirmation.

When a sample registers a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is considered the most challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening findings is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can detect drug intake for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection duration.
  • High difficulty to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historic data provision: It can indicate a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
