Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Oneida, Ohio. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing has nationwide centers, including those in Oneida, capable of performing hair tests. You generally need between 1.5 and 2 inches of hair from the head or body. This testing can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate customized options.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle tests. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now use hair drug testing instead of traditional urine tests. This method serves entities with strict anti-drug policies, like employers, courts, and probation officers. Hair tests offer major advantages, such as a longer detection period of up to 90 days, observed collection, and reduced chances of cheating. However, urine tests remain superior for detecting drugs used within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

The detection of drug and alcohol use has been effectively enhanced through hair testing. Hair can hold a historical record of alcohol and drug consumption by capturing biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When a hair sample is taken near the scalp, it can offer a detection span of up to roughly three months for substances like alcohol and other drugs. The collection of hair is easy, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to send for analysis.

An ideal hair sample for testing and confirmation is a 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 strands (about as thick as a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp, providing 100mg of hair. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests over 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. It is preferred to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. Mention of head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. All other types of hair, such as facial or axillary, are considered body hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is initially processed into a laboratory’s tracking system. The task includes ensuring the sample's proper sealing and delivery, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any leftover data that might not be provided by an electronic custody track system.

Screening is a preliminary, rapid check to identify drug presence. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive indication requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples suspected to be positive during Screening demand a follow-up confirmation.

Samples suspected as positive in Screening lead to more hair being separated from the original sample for the Extraction phase. This step involves withdrawing drugs from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

The Confirmation of any positive outcome from Screening is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All samples suggested to be positive undergo necessary washing before Confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory sequence—from Accessioning to Confirmation—conforms to reviews under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair credentials and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can recognize drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter range.
  • Reduced likelihood of cheating: Cheating a hair drug test proves to be significantly challenging, rendering results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals drug use patterns over time, instead of just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: A window of approximately 5-7 days is necessary for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
