In Overpeck, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, we have centers across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head is required, or body hair might suffice. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances as needed.

Recently, hair follicle testing has become a more popular drug screening method. It's preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over urine tests due to its extended detection window of up to 90 days. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation often opt for hair tests for this reason. While unbeatable in long-duration detection, urine tests remain more accurate for recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent mechanism for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. A person's hair retains a record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within its strands. When samples are taken near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. The procedure for hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A sample sized at 1.5 inches consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil width) collected near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, providing the ideal quantity for analysis and result confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels greater than 10, a 150mg sample is advised. Measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be collected, an equivalent mass of body hair can be utilized. The term head hair references only scalp hair, while body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory's drug testing process encompasses four pivotal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is initially processed into a lab's system. This step confirms the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides a preliminary check for drug presence. Although Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug presence in most samples, a positive screening result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening need further confirmation.

When a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. This phase involves drug extraction from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods such as urine or oral fluid, highlighting hair drug analysis as a challenging methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques verify positive screening outcomes. All samples presumed positive are washed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug evaluations can reveal drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Altering the results of a hair drug test is challenging, which means results tend to be more accurate.
  • Provides historical data: It offers insights into usage patterns over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become traceable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: Hair drug evaluations are typically pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
