Accredited Drug Testing offers full hair follicle drug testing services in Palestine, Ohio. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing, boasting locations nationwide where a hair test can be conducted. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head's crown or body suffices. Hair analyses can be done for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, drug testing methodologies have increasingly shifted towards hair follicle drug tests. Employers, judicial entities, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. For zero-tolerance workplace policies, court mandates, and those on probation, hair follicle testing is essential. One key advantage is its extended detection window—up to 90 days. It involves an observed collection process that's nearly invulnerable to tampering. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust tool for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When harvested close to the scalp, hair can present an alcohol and drug detection window of up to three months. Hair is effortless to gather, relatively challenging to adulterate, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the hair is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, it specifically relates to scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other categories of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes checking that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening signifies an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug usage on most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in a legal setting. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be initially positive in the Screening segment, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a much lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the hardest methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical data: It can reveal a trend of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
