In Pheasant Run, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise in hair testing ensures access to testing centers across all U.S. cities. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can be configured for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific testing purposes.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly adopted hair follicle testing. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors frequently opt for hair drug tests over urine tests. Hair follicle tests are critical for organizations enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, legal systems, and individuals under probation. Their main advantage is an extended drug use detection period of up to 90 days, with a strictly monitored collection process, minimizing the potential for tampering. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has garnered recognition as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and various drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer up to an approximate three-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent volume of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial procedure of integrating a sample into a laboratory's system. This entails verifying that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid check for drug misuse. While Screening serves as a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be admissible in court. Samples that yield presumptively positive results in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at a substantially lower concentration than in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed as needed before confirmation. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Challenging to cheat: It is notably difficult to deceive a hair drug test, making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Provides historical insight: It can deliver a usage pattern over a duration of time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Pheasant Run, OH, hair follicle testing stands out over urine tests with superior benefits. Unlike urine tests, hair testing offers a longer detection window, identifying drug use up to 90 days prior. This time frame gives a more complete picture of substance use patterns.

Hair testing provides higher detection accuracy due to its inherent nature of retaining drug markers longer. Urine tests, while conventionally used, do not offer the same extended insights.

  • Reliability: Harder to tamper with than urine samples.
  • Comprehensive: Ability to detect longer substance use history.

Extended Detection Window

In Pheasant Run, OH, hair follicle testing is unmatched in its ability to detect drug use over an extended period of up to 90 days. For employers, this extended detection window translates to a more informed decision-making process regarding employee drug habits.

This longer investigative scope provides insights into an individual's persistent substance use patterns, which is crucial for maintaining workplace safety and compliance.

  • Gain insights into consistent substance use over time.
  • Reinforces trust and safety in workplace environments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Pheasant Run, OH, employs hair follicle testing for its tamper-resistant qualities, substantially reducing the risk of sample adulteration. These tests are difficult to cheat, providing reliable results that are trusted by various stakeholders.

The nature of hair testing inherently protects against tampering, offering results that are considered unquestionable, ensuring an employer's confidence in the authenticity of the test.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
