Process Overview
There are four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

If a sample reads as positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a complex method to undertake.
Any positive screening outcome is verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all initially positive samples are cleansed as needed. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specialty and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.
