Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Racine, Ohio. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities available across numerous cities nationwide. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is typically required on the crown of the head, although body hair may also be used. Hair tests can yield results for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained prominence as a method for drug screening. Many employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse counselors prefer these tests over traditional urine analysis. They are favored by organizations with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and individuals under probation. The main advantage is the extended detection window, lasting up to 90 days, with an observed collection making cheating difficult. However, urine tests remain more precise for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective solution for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of drug and alcohol history by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) cut nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, ideal for testing and confirmation purposes. For EtG analysis, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen weight of 150mg is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar quantity of body hair can be used instead. The reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a laboratory system. This step involves confirming that the sample was sealed and transmitted correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry that the electronic chain of custody system hasn't provided.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for potential drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive result in Screening must be validated to be legally permissible. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample presents a presumptive positive in the Screening, a greater portion of hair is drawn from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are drawn from hair at much diminished concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a challenging methodology.

Any positive results from Screening are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation when required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug intake for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter time frame.
  • Hard to falsify: A hair drug test is very challenging to manipulate, ensuring more precise results.
  • Delivers historical insights: It shows a history of drug use over time, rather than just current usage.

Limitations:

  • Not effective for recent use: Detection in hair occurs approximately 5-7 days post drug use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often described as "hair follicle tests", it is the hair strand that undergoes the test, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Racine, OH, hair follicle testing offers numerous advantages over traditional urine tests. The primary benefit lies in its superior detection accuracy. Hair tests are less prone to manipulation, providing reliable results that urine tests cannot always guarantee. Hair testing also excels in identifying long-term substance use, giving a broader view of an individual's drug history, which is invaluable to employers seeking to enforce drug-free policies.

Moreover, hair tests are a solid choice for those looking to eliminate the chance of sample dilution or substitution. They deliver dependable results that ensure greater peace of mind for employers and other stakeholders. Unlike urine tests, hair follicle testing's inherent resistance to tampering ensures that the outcomes are reflective of true substance habits over time.

Extended Detection Window

In Racine, OH, the expanded detection window of hair follicle testing provides a clear advantage over other methods. This testing can reveal substance use spanning up to 90 days, whereas urine tests often fall short with much shorter detection periods. This technology allows employers to thoroughly understand an applicant or employee's substance history, serving as a crucial tool in assessing long-term drug use patterns.

The comprehensive nature of hair follicle testing ensures that organizations can maintain a drug-free environment by gaining a holistic view of their workforce's substance use. The extended window also assists in making informed hiring or disciplinary decisions, as it provides a deep insight into behavioral patterns that shorter window tests may miss.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle testing method employed in Racine, OH, significantly mitigates the risk of tampering. Unlike other testing forms, the hair collection process is less intrusive yet ensures that samples are virtually tamper-proof. This reliability factor is a key reason employers choose hair testing over urine testing, as it eliminates the risk of falsifying results through sample substitution or adulteration.

In scenarios where contesting results is a possibility, the robust integrity of hair follicle tests stands as a strong defense. These tests offer a dependable means to verify true substance usage and assure stakeholders of the authenticity of the results obtained.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
