Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Richmond Heights, Ohio. Whether you require testing for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair analysis is unsurpassed. With centers across all cities Nationwide, reliable hair testing is within reach. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required from the crown or body, and our tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and various custom options.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug assessments have gained popularity over traditional methods. Increasingly utilized by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, these tests provide a preferred alternative to urine testing. Hair evaluations benefit from longer detection windows, up to 90 days, ensuring nearly uncheatable results through observed collection. For drug usage within 5 days, however, urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust tool for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When procured next to the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month detection period for various substances. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is endorsed. It is advised to gauge the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be absent, an equivalent volume of body hair may be gathered. Head hair refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result primarily involves four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any supplementary data absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for abuse substances. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss substance use in most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples with presumptive positives from Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which contributes to the complexity of executing hair drug screening.

Confirmation for any positive Screening outcome is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a shorter span.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It's highly challenging to evade a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over a period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs generally need 5-7 days before becoming traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing with traditional urine tests in Richmond Heights, OH, the benefits of hair testing stand out. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
