Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Rocky Fork Point, Ohio. Whether you need a drug or alcohol hair test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with facilities across the nation to conduct these tests. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body, hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing requirements.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a popular method of drug screening. These tests are chosen by employers, court systems, and substance abuse professionals over standard urine tests. Used by organizations enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, as well as by courts and probation officers, hair follicle drug tests offer a longer detection window, up to 90 days, with an observed collection process to prevent tampering. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening has become recognized as an effective technique for detecting alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of substances by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the growing strand. When taken near the scalp, it can reveal a detection span of up to around three months for various substances. Hair is easy to gather, relatively tamper-proof, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of approximately 200 strands (equivalent to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp supplies 100mg, the ideal quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, supplementary needs, and/or screenings beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It's advisable to measure the sample weight using a jeweler’s balance. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be obtained. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair variants (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The test result processing in the lab consists of four critical stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preparation of a sample within the lab's framework. It ensures the sample is sealed and transported properly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any remaining data entry not covered by a digital custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary evaluation for substance abuse. It's a cost-efficient approach for excluding drug use in most samples, but a positive finding in the screen necessitates confirmation for court validity. Samples that show presumptive positivity in this phase require further verification.

Should a sample indicate potential positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial set for Extraction. This stage involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), highlighting the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive result from the screening is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash process before confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Chronological analysis: It provides insight into substance usage trends over a duration, rather than recent use alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs generally become detectable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair tests are often costlier than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair pigmentation and individual variance in growth can influence metabolite concentration.

Note: Despite commonly being termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle below the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
