Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing in Rosemount, Ohio. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you need, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers across all cities nationwide to conduct a hair test. Hair on the crown or body of 1.5 to 2 inches can typically be utilized. Hair tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing choices.

Over the past years, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests instead of standard urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, the court system, and probation programs. The main advantage is a longer drug use detection window, typically up to 90 days, collected under observation, and nearly foolproof. Yet, urine tests remain the most accurate for screening recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has established itself as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows, offering a long-term history of alcohol and other drug consumption. When taken close to the scalp, hair can provide a detection window for drugs and alcohol of up to roughly three months. The collection process is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient for transportation.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 strands of hair (around the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advised to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In instances where scalp hair is inaccessible, a similar quantity of body hair may be taken. When mentioning head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This step involves ensuring that the sample was sealed and transported appropriately, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift evaluation for drug abuse. While it serves as a cost-effective approach to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screening must be confirmed to remain admissible in legal contexts. Any sample that presumptively tests positive in Screening necessitates follow-up confirmation.

If a sample turns out to be presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparation in the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most intricate methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as needed. The whole laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is highly challenging to outsmart a hair drug test, thus yielding more credible results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can outline a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result fluctuations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test focuses on analyzing the hair strand and does not involve the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
