Accredited Drug Testing in Ross, Ohio offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. If you require a hair or alcohol test, our centers nationwide, including every city, specialize in hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or the body is needed. Our hair tests can be used to detect drugs, measure alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained prominence in drug screenings. More employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Those with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation frequently choose this method, as it offers a longer detection period of up to 90 days, is collected under supervision, and is difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests remain most reliable for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair can capture a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the emerging hair strand. A sample taken near the scalp can offer a detection period of approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, with hair being relatively resistant to tampering and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's diameter) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Using a jeweler's scale for measurement is advisable. In the absence of scalp hair, a proportionate amount of body hair can be obtained. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other forms (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in laboratory handling of a drug test result encompass Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's framework. This process includes ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening provides a rapid, initial assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample be presumed positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the main sample for Extraction. At this stage, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (such as urine or saliva), making hair drug testing one of the more challenging methods to execute.

Verification of any positive result from Screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Any samples presumed positive are cleansed prior to the final confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe for detection.
  • Resistance to cheating: Hair drug tests are significantly harder to manipulate, enhancing result reliability.
  • Shows usage patterns: Provides a record of substance use over time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • No recent use detection: Substances take about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative testing options.
  • Result variability: Attributes like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels within hair.

Note: Often dubbed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the scalp's hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests in Ross, OH. Its superior detection accuracy and higher reliability vouch for it. Unlike urine tests, hairstests cover a more extended period, enabling a thorough review of substance use history.

Employers switching to hair follicle tests benefit from the test's resistance to manipulation and its extensive detection window, factors that aid in maintaining integrity in screening processes.

Extended Detection Window

In Ross, OH, one of the significant benefits of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window, capturing drug use over the past 90 days. This broad detection period gives employers a complete picture of an individual's drug history.

For those wanting an in-depth view of substance use, hair tests are invaluable. They surpass traditional testing methods, such as urine tests, by offering insights that span several months.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle drug tests provide unmatched reliability in Ross, OH, due to their tamper-resistant nature. Unlike urine samples, which can be altered or substituted, hair samples are straightforward to collect and virtually impossible to alter.

This secure testing method gives peace of mind to employers, legal entities, and testing agencies, ensuring that the results they obtain are honest and reliable.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
