Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Roswell, Ohio. If you're in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise lies in hair testing, with numerous centers nationwide, capable of conducting this test. Generally, it requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body, which can analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has gained popularity for drug screenings. Employers, the legal system, and substance abuse specialists now opt for hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle assessments benefit employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, as well as for court investigations and probation conditions. A significant advantage of the hair test is its extended detection time—up to 90 days—collected through monitored processes, making it extremely difficult to falsify. However, urine tests are still the preferred choice for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand fibers as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation purposes. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. References to head hair denote scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be permissible in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves removing drugs from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with a presumptive positive result are washed before confirmation when required. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited detection window.
  • Resistance to manipulation: It is quite challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can exhibit a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other methodologies for drug testing.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
