Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Saint Bernard, Ohio. For those needing hair drug or alcohol evaluations, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair examinations, and we have centers in all cities Nationwide ready to conduct a hair evaluation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required for testing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized options.

Recently, drug assessments have increasingly utilized hair follicle testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over standard urine assessments. Hair test benefits include broader detection spans of up to 90 days and an observed collection process, making it nearly impossible to cheat. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for analysis. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels greater than 10, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. When we mention head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types such as facial or underarm hair.

Process Overview

The primary steps involved in processing a drug test result in a lab are: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where a sample is initially processed into the lab's system. This step ensures the sample was securely sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any missing information absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial, rapid assessment for substances. Although Screening is economical for excluding drug consumption in most cases, court-admissible results require confirmation of a positive screen. Samples flagged as positive in Screening need further verification.

Should Screening yield a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the sample for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are retrieved from hair at lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging to execute.

Verification of any positive Screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes review by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter detection span of urine tests.
  • Challenging to evade: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to manipulate, thereby increasing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides usage history: These tests offer insight into drug patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can affect metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," this test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Saint Bernard, OH, hair follicle testing prevails over urine tests. This method boasts enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. The longer detection period of hair testing significantly surpasses the shorter window of traditional urine tests, providing a more comprehensive look at an individual's substance use. This allows for a more thorough and effective assessment in meeting workplace or legal standards.

Hair testing is highly regarded for its superior resistance to tampering compared to urine tests. While urine samples can be adulterated or substituted, hair samples are more robust in maintaining integrity. This makes hair follicle testing a preferred choice for those aiming to ensure stringent and reliable results, particularly in settings with zero-tolerance drug use policies.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing, up to 90 days, offers considerable advantages for employers and individuals in Saint Bernard, OH. This timeline provides a holistic view of a subject's drug use history, as opposed to the limited timeframe of traditional urine tests. Employers gain valuable insights into an applicant or employee's long-term behavior, aiding in making informed decisions.

Hair testing's capability of capturing a prolonged history of substance use helps in the evaluation of chronic drug use, providing a broader understanding of an individual's lifestyle. This information is crucial for maintaining safety and compliance in workplaces, especially in roles that demand high responsibility and trust.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Saint Bernard, OH, is a tamper-resistant testing method that minimizes the risk of sample adulteration. Unlike urine tests that can be easily manipulated through the addition of chemicals or substitution, hair samples are much more challenging to adulterate, ensuring the integrity of results.

This method provides stakeholders with reliable and unquestionable results, crucial for industries and scenarios where maintaining rigorous standards is essential. By employing hair follicle testing, businesses and legal entities can trust the outcomes, significantly reducing risks associated with faulty test results.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
