At Accredited Drug Testing, we provide holistic hair follicle drug testing services in Saint Louisville, Ohio. Whether it's for drugs or alcohol, our specialization in hair analysis is unmatched, with a presence across all U.S. cities ready to perform these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Results can reveal drug or alcohol use and offer tailored testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for substance testing. A growing number of workplaces, judicial systems, and substance abuse counselors prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Companies with no drug use policies, courts, and individuals on probation find these tests more reliable. Their advantage lies in a significant detection window, up to 90 days, and an observed collection procedure that is difficult to manipulate. However, for detecting recent usage within 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair can offer a comprehensive history of substance use by preserving biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hairs (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For tests including EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg for the specimen is advised. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen's weight. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" includes all other types of hair (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where a sample first enters a laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample's seal and shipment were intact, issuing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts a brisk inspection for drugs of abuse. Screening is efficient and resource-saving for negating drug usage in most samples; however, a positive screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that presumptively test positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

For samples that exhibit presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair but at notably lower concentrations than seen in other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is what makes hair drug testing genuinely complex to execute.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive screening result is completed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the comprehensive laboratory protocol undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and conforms to the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a much shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is quite unlikely, which enhances result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It delivers a profile of drug consumption over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Typically, hair drug tests are more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Various factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand itself and not on the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers numerous benefits over traditional urine tests in Saint Louisville, OH. A key advantage is its comprehensive detection capability, allowing for a broader and more reliable substance use overview. Unlike urine tests, hair testing can reveal drug use patterns and histories, providing a more detailed picture of an individual's habits.

This testing also outperforms urine tests in terms of accuracy. University studies show a higher reliability rate in detecting substances, minimizing false positives and negatives. Furthermore, without the invasive nature of urine tests, hair follicle testing allows for a more dignified and discreet process for individuals.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Saint Louisville, OH, offers a decisive advantage. Able to identify drug use up to 90 days prior, this method gives organizations a prolonged insight into an individual's substance history. This ensures that employers can make informed decisions based on a comprehensive view rather than a snapshot.

This extensive picture crafted by hair testing proves invaluable for roles demanding high safety standards. It eliminates uncertainties regarding recent clean periods that could be the result of simple avoidance tactics rather than a genuine change in drug use behavior.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Saint Louisville, OH, sets the standard for tamper-resistant methods. Its collection process significantly reduces the risk of adulterated samples, ensuring the integrity and reliability of results. Unlike other tests, this approach effectively counters cheating tactics, providing unquestionable outcomes.

The structure of hair allows it to encapsulate drug-use markers within its growth substance. This physical barrier effectively prevents external tampering and ensures that each test remains accurate, offering peace of mind for employers and individuals relying on these results for critical decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
