In Salesville, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. If you're seeking reliable hair drug or alcohol testing, our expertise ensures accurate results. Available across numerous Nationwide centers, hair samples—usually 1.5 to 2 inches from your head or body—can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer custom test options.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle tests. Employers, legal systems, and substance professionals now prefer them over urine tests. Ideal for zero-tolerance employers, judicial obligations, or probation, these tests detect drug use for up to 90 days through an overseen process, making manipulation difficult. However, urine remains accurate for recent use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for detecting substance and alcohol use. Hair captures a lengthy record of alcohol and other substance abuse by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair offers a detection span of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg, an optimal amount for screening and validation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's best to measure the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we strictly mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase where the sample is processed into a laboratory system. This step includes ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening initiates with a rapid check for substances. Screening accurately excludes substance usage in most samples, yet any positive screen must be validated for legal acceptance. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Upon a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to undertake.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, contrary to urine tests with a shorter detection duration.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests offer a challenge for cheating, thus ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical usage insights: They can capture a timeline of drug consumption over extended periods, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of revealing immediate drug use: Drugs are usually detectable in hair within around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other substance testing techniques.
  • Potential result disparity: Elements such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence the concentration of drug indicators in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", this testing process assesses the hair strand rather than the hair follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
