In Scioto Furnace, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in hair testing, we have centers across all cities Nationwide. For most cases, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices for testing. Hair tests are available for detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more frequent choice for drug testing. Favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, it often replaces urine tests. Hair tests are preferred in zero-tolerance policies, court mandates, and probationary requirements. Their main advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, coupled with strict collection protocol, making tampering nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain best for recent substance use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is considered a formidable means for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and substance use by securing biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. When procured near the scalp, hair offers up to roughly a 3-month timeframe for recognizing alcohol and substance use. Hair collection is uncomplicated, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A segment of 1.5 inches containing approximately 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil in size) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for evaluation and verification. For EtG, supplements, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the sample. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a corresponding amount of body hair may be acquired. When indicating head hair, we solely mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other varieties of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal four steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This procedure comprises ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial swift assessment for illicit substances. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to eliminate drug usage on most specimens, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be admissible legally. Samples that test positive in Screening mandate a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample test positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for use in Extraction. At this point, substances are isolated from the hair at a markedly lower concentration versus other techniques (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive result from screening is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as required. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use extending up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter coverage.
  • Hard to deceive: Altering a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insights: It delivers a timeline of drug consumption over a longer period, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It normally takes 5-7 days for substances to become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are typically pricier than alternate drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Influences such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can sway the level of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the evaluation actually focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle testing with traditional urine tests in Scioto Furnace, OH, the benefits are clear. Hair testing provides superior detection accuracy, detecting substances over a more extended period. This method is not only reliable but also eliminates common cheating tactics associated with urine tests.

For employers and legal processes, the longer detection window of hair testing, paired with its accuracy, makes it a preferred method. While urine tests might capture recent usage, they fall short in providing a comprehensive substance use history.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing's extended detection window is a standout feature for identifying drug use. In Scioto Furnace, OH, this testing captures a person’s substance history over up to 90 days, offering employers a detailed view of usage patterns.

This lengthy detection period is particularly advantageous for gaining insight into long-term or periodic substance consumption, presenting a fuller picture compared to other testing methods.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests significantly reduce the risk of tampering or sample adulteration in Scioto Furnace, OH. The robust collection and analysis processes ensure results are reliable and unquestionable, providing peace of mind.

Traditional methods, like urine tests, are more susceptible to manipulation. However, hair testing, with its observed collection process, fortifies the integrity of the testing, eliminating these concerns.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
