Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Shreve, Ohio. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialists are well-versed in hair testing. With testing centers located nationwide, we can conduct hair tests conveniently. Generally, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp, but body hair is often acceptable too. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common choice for drug screening. Employers, the judicial system, and substance abuse experts are increasingly choosing hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This method is favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation officers. The main advantage is the extended detection window, up to 90 days, along with the secure collection process, which makes it challenging to tamper with. However, for detecting substance use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Analyzing a strand of hair has become recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can deliver up to an estimated 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect hair samples, relatively challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hair strands (akin to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the preferred sample for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable amount of body hair may be taken. When mentioning head hair, it concerns scalp hair strictly. Body hair encompasses all other forms of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The procedure in the lab for handling a drug test outcome includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step involves confirming that the sample was securely sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening includes an initial brief test for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen needs validation to be valid in court. Any samples that test presumptively positive during Screening mandate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are removed from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening poses the greatest difficulty to perform.

Verification of any positive screening output is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: It is extremely tough to manipulate a hair drug test, thereby making the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a sequence of drug use across time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs require around 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests incur higher costs than other methods of drug testing.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug byproducts in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
