Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Somerville, Ohio. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair evaluations and offers testing facilities in every city across the nation capable of conducting a hair examination. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is needed. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing options.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly utilized hair follicle tests. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists demand hair drug evaluations instead of the typical urine analysis. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by zero-tolerance drug employers, legal courts, and individuals under probation. Their primary advantage is the expanded detection span for drug use, usually up to 90 days, collected under observation, and incredibly difficult to falsify. Nevertheless, urine tests remain the most precise for assessing drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a vital method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds a chronological record of substances by capturing biochemical markers within the hair fibers. Collected near the scalp, hair offers approximately a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp amounts to 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advocate using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If no scalp hair is available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" signifies scalp hair only, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome involve Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial sample processing to enter it into the laboratory’s system. This step includes verifying the sample's seal and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs a preliminary evaluation for substance abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient way to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive results need confirmation for legal validity. Samples testing presumptively positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. In this process, drug extraction from hair occurs at considerably lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis the most complex technique.

Confirming any positive screening involves methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing identifies drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a more limited detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug testing is notoriously hard to deceive, rendering results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: Hair tests reveal patterns of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing commonly incurs higher costs than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
