Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in South Amherst, Ohio. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is dedicated to hair testing, and we provide testing locations across all cities Nationwide capable of performing a hair test. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

Nowadays, using a hair follicle drug test as a method of drug screening is becoming more prevalent. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts prefer a hair drug test over a traditional urine screening. Employers with strict no-drug-use policies, courts, and probationary individuals rely on hair follicle testing. Its main advantage lies in a prolonged detection period of drug use—up to 90 days, involving an observed collection process, making deception nearly impossible. Nonetheless, for drug use within the past 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol use. Hair captures a long-term timeline of alcohol and other drugs by trapping biomarkers within the hair strand fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can deliver up to a roughly 3-month period of detection for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches containing roughly 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen size of 150mg is suggested. We advise weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we only refer to the scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result typically comprises four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of processing a sample into the laboratory's system. This step includes checking that the sample was secured and transported properly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage for many samples, a positive result from this step must be confirmed for it to be valid in legal contexts. Samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample results in presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug testing methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is accomplished through techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is also accredited under ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeline.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is exceptionally challenging to evade a hair drug test, which lends to more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: There is an approximate 5-7 day delay for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Even though referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In South Amherst, OH, opting for hair follicle testing over urine testing showcases enhanced benefits. The enduring detection window of hair tests extends up to 90 days, far exceeding the limited scope of urine alternatives.

Employers favor hair testing for its superior detection accuracy and reliability, especially useful for maintaining a drug-free work environment. Unlike urine tests, hair sampling curtails attempts at tampering or result falsification.

Through meticulous analysis, hair follicle tests afford a clearer substance history, aiding employers, courts, and substance professionals in making informed decisions with confidence.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests offer an extended detection window that is unrivaled, making it a choice option in South Amherst, OH. By capturing drug use activity over a lengthy period of up to 90 days, it provides critical information.

The expansive timeframe allows employers to portray an individual's comprehensive substance history, illuminating otherwise hidden patterns which could be missed in shorter-range tests.

This elongated detection aspect of hair testing provides in-depth insights that support decision-making in sensitive scenarios, such as employment screening or legal investigations.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
