In South Charleston, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those requiring assessments for drugs or alcohol, our centers across the nation provide specialized hair testing. Typically, hair samples of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body are used. Our analysis can detect drugs, alcohol, or provide tailored testing solutions.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a preferred method over urine tests. Many organizations, legal bodies, and substance abuse experts favor hair testing for its extended detection capabilities. This test benefits zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probation cases with a 90-day drug use detection and difficult sample fraud. Yet, for recent 5-day usage, urine tests stay more reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a longer-term account of alcohol usage and other substances by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer up to nearly a 90-day detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to deliver.

An ideal sample for screening and verification is a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yielding 100mg of hair. For EtG, expanded tests, and/or panels over 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair might be collected. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug testing results includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into the laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was adequately sealed and transported, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any supplementary data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary swift assessment for substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must undergo confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary validation.

For samples that test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are withdrawn from hair at considerably lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation, if needed. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection interval: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which have a shorter detection interval.
  • Challenge to manipulate: Hair drug tests are notably hard to manipulate, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over a longer period, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations are generally pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors such as hair pigmentation and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the method scrutinizes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In South Charleston, OH, hair follicle testing offers clear advantages over traditional urine tests. It provides superior accuracy in detecting drug use due to its extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
