Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in South Lebanon, Ohio. If you require a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing and offers facilities nationwide that conduct these tests. In general, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method. Various employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer this over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are notably used by organizations with strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation. A notable advantage of hair follicle testing is the extended detection window, lasting up to 90 days. However, for recent drug use—within five days—urine tests remain the best option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of drug and alcohol history by capturing biomarkers within the strands of emerging hair. If cut near the scalp, hair can show a detection period of up to around three months for drugs and alcohol. It's easy to gather hair, tough to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch length containing roughly 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, perfect for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, extras, and/or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg sample is advisable. We advocate using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn't an option, a similar quantity of body hair can be retrieved. Head hair denotes only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test incorporates four vital steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab’s framework. This step ensures the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening represents a preliminary swift test for drug misuse. Though Screening is a cost-friendly method to reject drug use in most samples, a positive result requires verification to be court-admissible. Presumptive positives from Screening undergo further confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most intricate method to conduct.

Positive Screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary presumptive positives are washed before confirmation. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation follows both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Resistance to cheating: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Indicates historical usage: It can outline a timeline of drug use spanning a period, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual variances in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
