Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in South Russell, Ohio. Specializing in drug or alcohol hair tests, we offer nationwide testing centers, capable of administering these tests in any city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair tests can screen for various substances, including drugs and alcohol/ETG, and other customized tests are also available.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become an increasingly favored method over urine testing. This preference is observed among employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals seeking reliable results. Hair tests are particularly valuable for enforcing zero-tolerance policies, court orders, or probation monitoring. Their chief advantage is the extended detection period, reaching up to 90 days, with collections done under supervision, ensuring integrity and making deception nearly impossible. However, for recent usage within the past 5 days, urine testing remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessment is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair conserves a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeline of roughly 90 days for substances. Its collection is straightforward, it's challenging to tamper with, and it's easily transportable.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment with roughly 200 hairs (comparable to a #2 pencil's size) nearest to the scalp will yield roughly 100mg, the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for accuracy. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. By "head hair," we specifically mean scalp hair. "Body hair" applies to all other hair categories (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary stage where a sample is inputted into the lab’s system. It involves ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data input unprovided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial swift assessment for substance misuse. Although it is an economical method to discard drug usage in most samples, a positive screen needs further confirmation for legal proceedings. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require subsequent verification.

Should a specimen return a presumptive positive in Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample to prepare for Extraction. Here, substances are extracted at lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening particularly complex.

Confirmation of any positive screening response is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The entire lab procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited window.
  • Hard to deceive: The difficulty in deceiving a hair drug test results in more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a record of drug use over time, as opposed to solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot ascertain recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and growth rate variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
