Located in South Solon, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Specializing in both drug and alcohol hair tests, we provide nationwide testing centers capable of administering hair tests in any city. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific testing requirements.

In recent times, the hair follicle drug test has become more prevalent as a favored method for drug screening. Many employers, judicial authorities, and substance abuse experts now opt for this over the conventional urine test. Hair follicle drug testing is preferred by companies with strict anti-drug policies, the judiciary, and probationary services. Its key advantage is a longer detection time for drug use, lasting up to 90 days, and being collected under observed conditions, making tampering nearly impossible. For recent drug use, within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis stands as a significant technique for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and narcotics by embedding biomarkers in the growing hair fibers. Gathered near the scalp, hair can reflect up to about a 90-day detection period for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section with around 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100 mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and validation. For EtG, supplemental analyses, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, 150 mg of the sample is advisable. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, it refers to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core stages in the lab handling of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of a specimen into a lab’s framework. This step verifies that the specimen was properly packaged and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data tasks not provided by an electronic tracking system.

Screening conducts a preliminary quick verification for illicit substances. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude substance use in the majority of cases, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal acceptance. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require secondary verification.

If a specimen is presumptively positive during the Screening stage, extra hair is drawn from the initial sample and processed for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is implemented via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and meets the ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter span.
  • Hard to deceive: It is notably challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, increasing result precision.
  • Offers historical insight: It can outline a pattern of substance use over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug assessments are typically more costly than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Variations such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
