In Sparta, OH, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle substance screenings. Whether testing for drugs or alcohol, our centers across the nation can handle your needs. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body may be used. Our hair tests can be tailored for specific substances, alcohol/ETG, or other options, ensuring detailed analysis.

Recently, hair follicle testing has seen increased use for substance detection. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now prefer it over urine tests. The method is favored by organizations enforcing strict drug policies, courts, and probation programs. The key advantage lies in its extended detection span of up to 90 days and difficulty in tampering, although urine tests remain optimal for recent use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand, offering a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use. When hair is obtained near the scalp, it can reveal up to a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and easy to transport.

Securing a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample's secure sealing and shipment, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any supplementary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective strategy to exclude drug use for the majority of specimens, a positive result necessitates validation to be admissible in court. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening must undergo additional confirmation.

In cases where a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, extra hair is collected from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most complex methodology.

Validation of any positive screening outcome is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptively positive samples are washed as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing generally incurs higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth patterns can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
