Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in St. Louisville, Ohio. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol hair test, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with facilities nationwide for your convenience. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is sufficient. These tests can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to custom requests.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become more prevalent in drug assessments. Numerous employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer this method over traditional urine tests. This test is favored for strict no-drug policies, court mandates, and probation cases. The main advantage lies in its extended detection window, up to 90 days, under observed conditions, and nearly tamper-proof, although urine tests remain sensitive within the initial 5-day window after use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair stores a longer history of alcohol and other drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. When taken from close to the scalp, hair can provide about a 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (approximate size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to collect 150mg of the specimen. We suggest weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If there's no scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively refer to scalp hair. Body hair accounts for all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The four essential steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the primary processing of a specimen into a laboratory's system. This step encompasses verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial speedy check for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in court. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample shows a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a concentration much lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening stands as the most complex methodology.

The Confirmation of any positive Screening result is accomplished via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positive results are washed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, which enhances the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical information: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to detect recent use: Drugs need approximately 5-7 days post-use to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other testing methods.
  • Results variability: Elements such as hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests," the procedure evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in St. Louisville, OH eclipses urine tests by offering unmatched detection reliability. Hair analysis is more comprehensive, capturing a broader scope of substance use history. Unlike urine tests, which are limited, hair testing presents a solid foundation for ongoing accuracy in identifying drug and alcohol consumption.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
