Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sterling, Ohio. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in hair testing, with centers across all cities nationwide capable of conducting such a test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer other customized testing options.

In recent years, drug testing methods increasingly include hair follicle tests. A growing number of employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals favor a hair drug test over a traditional urine test. These tests are popular among employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, the judiciary, and individuals on probation. The key advantage is a longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, ensured through an observed collection process, making them difficult to tamper with. However, for drug use detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive history of substance use by encasing biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers. When sourced near the scalp, it can reveal a roughly three-month timeframe of drug and alcohol usage. Hair collection is uncomplicated, somewhat resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg, which is the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation. For procedures like EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg amount is advisable. We suggest weighing the hair on a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair is collectable. By scalp hair, we mean hair from the head only. Body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test outcomes involves four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial sample processing within a lab’s system. This procedure entails confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any supplementary data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples that testing indicates are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When Screening indicates a presumptive positive result, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction process. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair in much smaller concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive screening results undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review per both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days prior, whereas urine tests have a more restricted period of detection.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug testing is difficult to subvert, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal drug usage trends over a timeframe, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair about 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative testing approaches.
  • Results variation: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Sterling, OH, hair follicle tests surpass traditional urine tests due to their superior detection abilities. Hair tests offer a wider window for identifying substance use, providing more comprehensive results. Unlike urine tests, which detect recent use, hair tests reveal patterns over a longer period.

The reliability of hair testing is unmatched, with minimal risk of tampering or false results. Its effectiveness in identifying drug use makes it the preferred method for employers keen on maintaining a zero-tolerance policy.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Sterling, OH, offers a significant detection window, extending up to 90 days, thus enabling employers to evaluate a candidate's substance use history comprehensively. This prolonged detection timeline provides a broader perspective compared to other methods.

The extensive window not only aids in identifying chronic drug use but also helps in recognizing periodic usage patterns, offering a more detailed understanding of an individual's substance history, crucial for informed decision-making.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Sterling, OH, is renowned for its resistance to tampering. Unlike urine tests, hair tests significantly reduce the risk of sample adulteration due to their complex collection and testing process, ensuring integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
