Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Stockport, Ohio. For hair drug or alcohol tests, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair diagnostics, operating testing facilities across all cities Nationwide ready to conduct a hair test. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body, hair tests identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized further.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become the norm in drug testing methods. Many Industries, judicial systems, and Substance Misuse experts favor hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, the judiciary, and those on probation due to their longer detection window of up to 90 days and rigorous sample collection, making cheating nearly unfeasible. Yet, urine tests remain the gold standard for screenings detecting usage within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Regarded as a robust instrument for identifying drug and alcohol use, hair testing offers significant insights. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. A sample collected near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol usage over a time frame of roughly 3 months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easily transportable.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness), yields 100mg of hair, which is an ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, add-ons, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is preferable. It is advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the sample's initial integration into a lab's system, ensuring it was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. It's an economical approach to exclude drug use in most samples, but a positive result here must be verified to be court-admissible. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging test to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of Hair Drug Testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests have the ability to detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have restricted timeframes.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, increasing the accuracy of outcomes.
  • Reveals history of use: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Lacks detection of recent use: It generally requires 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Price: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: When termed "hair follicle tests," the test itself analyzes the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Stockport, OH, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in various ways. Hair tests provide superior detection accuracy and are less prone to sample tampering. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
