Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Stony Ridge, Ohio. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is supported by our presence in testing centers across cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body can be used for testing. These tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific hair testing needs.

Recently, the preference for drug testing has shifted towards hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, court systems, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair drug tests over the more traditional urine tests. These processes are favored by organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial bodies, and probation programs due to their extensive detection capabilities. Hair follicle tests provide a prolonged detection window for substance use, typically extending up to 90 days, offering a monitored collection process and are highly resistant to manipulation. Conversely, for drug use within a 5-day frame, urine tests remain the gold standard for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has become a key method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair serves as a reliable historical record of substance use, capturing biomarkers in the strands as hair grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair samples are easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil in size), closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, add-ons, or for tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. In discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in a laboratory consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This process includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and sent, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and processing any extra data entry not completed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid test for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective means to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result in a screen must be confirmed for court acceptability. Any samples that appear positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, substances are removed from hair at a lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to perform.

Positive Screening results are corroborated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation when necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a more limited window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, thus results are more reliable.
  • Offers historical patterns: It shows the trajectory of drug use over a duration, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use detection limited: Drugs take about 5-7 days before they become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the actual examination is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Stony Ridge, OH, hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing due to its reliability and extended detection window. Hair tests deliver a broader insight into an individual's substance use over time. This method outshines traditional urine tests, especially with its capacity to detect drug use over 90 days, providing employers a reliable assessment tool.

Extended Detection Window

The hair follicle test's most significant advantage in Stony Ridge, OH, is its extended detection window. It allows employers to review a person's substance use over three months. Offering a comprehensive evaluation, this approach is invaluable for hiring processes and keeping workplaces drug-free.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
