In Sugar Tree Ridge, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with testing centers accessible across the nation. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair tests are adaptable, providing options for drug, alcohol/ETG, and bespoke testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular choice for drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly favoring these over traditional urine tests due to their zero-tolerance policies. Hair tests offer a significantly extended detection window of up to 90 days, are collected under observation, and are very difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is widely recognized as an effective method for identifying both drug and alcohol consumption. The fibers of hair capture biomarkers, providing a comprehensive record of substance use over time. When hair samples are taken near the scalp, they can reveal substance use over a roughly 90-day span. Collecting hair is easy, it's hard to tamper with, and it can be transported without hassle.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing about 200 hair strands (approximating the thickness of a #2 pencil) gives a yield of 100mg, perfect for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and routines beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair is suitable. "Head hair" refers purely to scalp hair, while "body hair" denotes all other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The four crucial laboratory steps for processing drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the sample's entry into a lab's database. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping, matches a sample with an LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data not covered by an electronic custody chain.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for potential drug presence. Though an economical way to rule out drug use in most samples, positive screens must be confirmed for legal validity. Presumptive positives in screening necessitate confirmation.

For samples marked presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair from the initial collection is used for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at significantly lower concentrations compared to methods like urine or oral fluids, making hair drug testing particularly meticulous.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed to confirm any positive screen results. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as required. The comprehensive process from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes scrutiny by both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Capable of detecting drugs used up to 90 days prior, contrasting sharply with the much shorter window offered by urine tests.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Hair drug tests boast results that are harder to falsify, enhancing reliability.
  • Offers historical insights: Displays patterns of drug intake over an extended duration, unlike tests capturing only immediate usage.

Limitations:

  • Failure to detect recent use: A window of approximately 5-7 days is required before drugs manifest in hair samples.
  • Expense: More costly compared to alternative drug testing strategies.
  • Result variability: Hair colors and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests," the assessment actually evaluates the hair strand rather than the underlying follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
