Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Sugarcreek, Ohio. Should you require a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing, a specialist in hair testing, has centers in all cities across the nation to conduct hair tests. Generally, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed, either from the head's crown or body. Hair tests are viable for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailor-made testing.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become a more common method for drug testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers who enforce zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation often rely on hair follicle drug tests. These tests' key advantage lies in their extended detection period for drug use, which can span up to 90 days and involves an observed collection process, making them nearly tamper-proof. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests still reign as the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now regarded as a robust method for detecting the consumption of drugs and alcohol. The hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair may be utilized. When we mention head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab handling of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial stage of processing a sample into a lab’s system. This process involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and sent, allotting a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary rapid test for commonly abused drugs. Although Screening is an economical way to eliminate drug use in the majority of cases, a positive screen must be verified for court validity. Any samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening need additional confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and set for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex method to conduct.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed as required before confirmation. The total laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can trace drug consumption for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a narrower detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair drug tests are highly resistant to tampering, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Supplies historical usage data: They present a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent intake: Detectability of drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually inspects the hair strand and not the scalp hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
