Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis services in Summit Station, Ohio. When a hair drug or alcohol assessment is necessary, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair-based evaluations with facilities available across the nation to execute these tests. Typically, hair from the crown, ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches, or body hair, may be used. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle tests have become prevalent in drug evaluations. Employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse experts increasingly prefer hair drug tests over urine analyses. Employers with stringent anti-drug policies, the courts, and those on probation often rely on these tests. The main advantage of hair analysis is its capacity to identify drug usage over an extended span of 90 days, is conducted under supervision, and is notably resistant to tampering. Despite this, urine tests remain the best for the past 5 days' detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is now recognized as an effective instrument for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of alcohol and substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can give an approximate 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, an equal volume of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it implies scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four core phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This phase involves confirming the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening effectively rules out drug usage on most samples inexpensively, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples deemed presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this stage, substances are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which marks hair drug screening as the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to circumvent: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, thus rendering the results more reliable.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over a duration, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the evaluation examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Summit Station, OH
Hair follicle testing trumps traditional urine tests due to its enhanced detection abilities and reliability. Unlike urine tests that detect recent use, hair tests in Summit Station, OH, provide a broad view of drug history. This makes it an ideal choice for employers needing comprehensive employee screening, as it reduces false-negative risks and increases overall trust in test outcomes.

Incorporating hair testing in drug testing policies assures employers of extended detection windows and prevents common issues like sample substitution, prevalent with urine tests. As such, hair drug tests offer a more holistic and reliable forecast of an employee's or candidate's substance use history.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Summit Station, OH
One of the defining features of hair follicle testing in Summit Station, OH, is its extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days. This capability provides a comprehensive narrative of an individual's substance use, significantly overshadowing urine tests' limited detection period, thus offering employers a clearer insight into an employee's long-term habits.

For employers seeking to maintain a drug-free workplace, this wider detection range allows for better-informed hiring and monitoring decisions. Long-term visibility into drug use not only enhances workforce safety but also reinforces employer diligence in maintaining stringent workplace standards.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
