Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Swanton, Ohio. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we specialize in this testing method and maintain testing centers across the entire country. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are necessary for the test. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other substances.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals often opt for hair tests instead of the traditional urine tests. This method is trusted by entities with no-drug policies, the court systems, and for probation. The main advantage of hair tests is their ability to detect long-term drug use, up to about 90 days, with observed sample collection reducing the risk of tampering. However, for drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers in the shaft of the developing hair. When cut near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimum sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise weighing the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a similar volume of body hair can be gathered. When we speak of head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Step-by-Step Process

The four critical stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This consists of confirming that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use on most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening do need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are separated from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most complex method to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair label and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a narrower detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can offer a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair shaft rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In the comparison between hair follicle and urine drug tests in Swanton, OH, hair testing is remarkably superior. Hair follicle testing provides a longer detection span, vastly exceeding that of traditional urine analysis.

Hair tests provide an increased accuracy for spotting substance use, with a substantial timeline of up to 90 days. This makes them far more reliable, minimizing the chances for misinterpretation or manipulation.

Extended Detection Window

Swanton, OH, employers benefit from hair follicle tests due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days. This provides a detailed overview of a subject's substance use history.

Hair tests shed light on long-term drug usage, offering an insightful view beyond the short detection period of urine tests. They highlight continuous use patterns, enabling employers to make informed decisions based on solid evidence.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
