In Sycamore, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. With specialized hair testing services, our centers, available across the nation, can conduct these tests effectively. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body is needed for testing, which can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other bespoke options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method. Preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists over traditional urine tests, it supports zero-tolerance policies. With a longer detection window of up to 90 days and onsite sample collection, these tests are hard to manipulate. Though, when detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain superior.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It captures long-term usage insights by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol usage for up to three months. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and it is easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample, roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil), will yield 100mg, which is optimal for analysis. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. The term head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, while body hair includes types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug tests involves four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, a sample is first processed into a lab system. This step confirms the sample was securely sealed and shipped, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to exclude drug use in many samples, a positive result must be validated to be legally credible. Any suspected positives in Screening necessitate further verification.

When a Screening result is presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive results from Screening occurs using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples that test presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation as needed. The entire procedural framework from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, rendering more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers usage history: It illustrates a drug usage trend over time rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair only after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than alternative methods.
  • Variability in results: Attributes such as hair color and growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing testing methods in Sycamore, OH, hair follicle tests demonstrate their dominance due to their accuracy and reliability over urine tests. Superior detection abilities, covering an extensive period, provide a complete picture of substance use, setting them apart from traditional options.

Employers benefit significantly from detailed insights that hair tests offer, effectively enforcing zero-tolerance policies. Such capability in detection increases assurance in maintaining a drug-free environment.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Sycamore, OH, provides an expanded detection period, clearly identifying drug use over up to 90 days. Extended timelines allow employers a thorough overview, surpassing the limits of short-time frame alternatives like urine tests.

This comprehensive detection window is crucial for workplaces focusing on long-term substance compliance. By presenting a broad view, it supports informed decision-making about an individual's substance history.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Sycamore, OH, hair follicle testing effectively curtails the possibility of specimen tampering, ensuring authentic results. Its tamper-resistant design upholds sample integrity, proving incredibly challenging to alter or falsify.

Such robustness solidifies its role in trusted testing methods. Confidence and assurance with each test reflect the rigorous validation achieved, establishing its superiority over less secure alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
