Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Syracuse, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to for precise hair and alcohol assessments. With nationwide centers, we cater to all cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffice. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

Hair follicle drug testing's popularity has surged for employers, courts, and professionals seeking alternatives to the urine test. Zero-tolerance employers and probation officers are choosing this method for its extended detection capabilities, up to 90 days, and its difficult-to-alter nature. However, for recent drug use, urine tests remain more accurate within the initial 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands’ fibers as they grow. If obtained near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, moderately resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, special tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be collected, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. Reference to head hair exclusively denotes scalp hair. Other body hair includes all additional hair forms (beard, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for a drug test result involves four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial incorporation of a sample into a lab’s system. This process ensures proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addresses any missing information not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of misuse. Despite its cost-effectiveness in ruling out drug use in many samples, Screening positives require confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that appear positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a potential positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for further Extraction preparation. Here, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Any positive result from Screening is confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as deemed necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug screening:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely challenging, yielding more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand rather than the underlying follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Syracuse, OH, stands superior to urine tests. The benefits include longer detection windows and enhanced accuracy, allowing for more reliable substance history evaluations. Hair tests provide clearer insight into an individual's past drug use, unlike traditional urine tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
