Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Tedrow, Ohio. For individuals needing a hair or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair follicle testing, with testing facilities found across numerous cities nationwide to perform these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the crown or another body part. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to specific hair testing demands.

Recently, drug testing protocols have increasingly favored hair follicle testing. Organizations like employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often mandate hair drug tests over typical urine tests. This method is essential for employers enforcing drug-free workplace policies, judiciary requirements, and probation conditions. Hair tests are favored for their extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, ensured by an observed collection process that negates tampering. Despite this, urine tests are preferred for recent drug use, within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective means for determining drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and various drugs by securing biomarkers within the strands of growth. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month timeframe of drug and alcohol usage. Collection of hair is easy, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hair strands (approximately equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, perfect for both screening and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional panels, and/or tests over 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advisable. It's suggested to weigh the hair sample with a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When we indicate head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory's processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with integrating a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This entails ensuring that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires validation to be legally acceptable. Samples that yield presumptive positive results during Screening necessitate further verification.

Upon obtaining a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from the hair at concentrations significantly lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening demands precision.

Confirmation of any positive Screening finding is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positives undergo a washing process as required. The comprehensive laboratory method from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria alongside ISO/IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug screenings can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Altering hair drug test results is notably difficult, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Displays usage trends: It can reveal a drug usage pattern over time rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Ineffective for recent use: Drugs generally become detectable in hair 5-7 days after consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations usually incur higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth rates may influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
