Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Trimble, Ohio. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is available across the nation, with testing centers in every city to conduct your hair analysis. For most cases, a sample from the crown of your head or body hair at a length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

Recently, the adoption of hair follicle drug testing has increased substantially. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals often prefer this to the traditional urine tests due to the enhanced benefits. With policies that demand zero drug tolerance, employers and courts use hair follicle testing, backed by the significant advantage of detecting drug use up to 90 days, all while minimizing chances of tampering. However, for detecting recent consumption within 5 days, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is highly regarded as a robust means for detecting drugs and alcohol usage. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. By collecting hair near the scalp, it can offer a detection timeframe of up to around three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg, deemed the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. It's advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair may be gathered. When referring to head hair, this specifically means scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial treatment of a sample within a lab’s system. This entails ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry needs not met by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial swift inspection for substances of abuse. While screening is an economical method to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to hold up in court. Any samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening require a secondary verification.

Where a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial amount and prepared for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at far lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thereby making hair drug screening particularly challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any sample with a positive preliminary screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with a presumptive positive are pre-washed before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is thoroughly examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a narrow detection period.
  • Hard to cheat: Surpassing a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: Paves the way to depicting a pattern of drug utilization over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: It takes nearly 5-7 days for drugs to show up in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can alter the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite being frequently coined as "hair follicle tests", the examination actually assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
