In Valley City, Ohio, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with centers available nationwide to fulfill this need. Generally, a hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is adequate. These tests assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized to suit specific requirements.

Recently, there's been an increase in using hair follicle drug tests for screenings. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists favor these tests over urine tests. Hair tests are crucial for entities with strict no-drug policies, legal bodies, and those on probation. The test's significant advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under direct observation, reducing the chances of manipulation. However, for recent drug use detection within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Over time, hair testing has proven valuable for detecting usage of drugs and alcohol. The hair strands retain biomarkers within their fibers, offering an extended timeline of substance use. A sample taken near the scalp can unveil drug or alcohol consumption over a period of roughly three months. Hair samples are straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield approximately 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample size for analysis and verification. For tests like EtG, add-ons, or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is suggested. It is advised to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, an equivalent mass of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair indicate scalp hair specifically. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory assessment of a drug test sample comprises four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary incorporation of a sample into the lab system, ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody tool.

Screening is an initial assessment for drug presence. While economical for ruling out drug intake in the majority of cases, a positive result in Screening requires verification to hold legitimacy in legal settings. Any samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

When a sample records a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, it necessitates further hair extraction from the specimen and preparation for Extraction. This phase involves isolating drugs from hair at considerably lower concentrations than other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), illustrating why hair drug testing remains a complex methodology.

Verification of any positive Screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are cleansed before verification, as needed. The full laboratory operation, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug screenings can trace substance use up to 90 days, contrary to urine tests with a more limited detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Manipulating hair drug tests is highly challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage patterns: It illustrates a timeline of drug use trends, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Unable to show immediate use: Drugs become traceable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Hair color and growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair samples.

Note: Commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand and not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
