Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Vanlue, Ohio. Should you require a test for drugs or alcohol using hair samples, our specialty lies in hair testing, with facilities Nationwide positioned to conduct the procedure. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required from the scalp, though body hair is also acceptable. Our tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored tests.

Over recent years, drug testing processes have increasingly adopted hair follicle testing. This has become a preference for many workplaces, legal systems, and addiction specialists, seeking alternatives to the traditional urine analysis. Companies with stringent no-drug policies, legal organizations, and individuals on probation prefer hair tests due to their extensive detection window, lasting up to 90 days, and the secure collection method, minimizing fraud. Despite this, the urine test remains most accurate for drug use within a 5-day timeframe.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as an effective mechanism for tracking drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within its shaft. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal up to an estimated 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. It's easy to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to dispatch.

A 1.5-inch portion, comprising around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, suitable for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, extended panels, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. Should scalp hair be sparse, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. References to head hair imply scalp hair exclusively. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four pivotal steps in lab processing of a drug test are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase in integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process entails ensuring the sample was sealed and sent correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any outstanding data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial cursory review for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive outcome must be confirmed to be legally valid. Presumed positive samples from Screening necessitate subsequent confirmation.

When a sample yields a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex procedure.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation if required. The overarching lab sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection range.
  • Challenging to alter results: It's exceedingly hard to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reveals usage patterns: It offers insights into drug use trends over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Vanlue, OH, hair follicle testing stands out as a superior choice over traditional urine tests. This method provides enhanced reliability due to its longer detection period and resilience to tampering. Employers and legal authorities find these tests more robust, ensuring a dependable assessment of an individual's drug usage over time. The detailed insights offered by hair tests surpass the limits of urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Vanlue, OH, offers an extensive detection timeframe, allowing for the analysis of drug consumption up to 90 days prior. This prolonged detection window provides employers with a thorough view of an employee's or candidate's substance use history. Having such comprehensive data aids in better decision-making processes, crucial for maintaining workplace safety and integrity.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle testing in Vanlue, OH, makes it an excellent choice for those requiring irrefutable results. This testing method significantly reduces the potential for sample manipulation, as the collection process is supervised, and the physiological properties of hair impede adulteration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
