Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Watertown, Ohio. For individuals requiring drug or alcohol hair evaluations, Accredited Drug Testing stands out in hair sample analysis, with facilities located across all cities Nationwide. These centers can conduct hair examinations needing 1.5 to 2 inches of growth from either the crown or body hair. Tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

In recent times, the method for drug testing has increasingly incorporated hair follicle testing. Many employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair analysis over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers commonly use these tests. The key advantage is the extended detection window for drug use, generally up to 90 days, collected via direct observation, minimizing the chance of tampering. Yet, for detecting drug use within five days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When clipped near the scalp, hair delivers up to a 3-month detection scope for substances. It's straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch snippet of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal specimen for testing and confirming. For tests involving EtG, additional analyses, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advised. We suggest verifying the weight of the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, the equivalent quantity of body hair is an alternative. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory methodology for drug testing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial sample entry into the lab’s system. This involves confirming the sample was correctly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for abuse substances. Though Screening is economically efficient to exclude drug consumption for most samples, a positive result requires validation for legal examination. Any samples indicating potential positives in Screening must undergo a secondary validation.

Should a screening indicate presumptive positivity, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. At this juncture, substances are retrieved from hair at significantly lower levels than with other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), underscoring the complexities of hair drug screening.

Positive screening verifications proceed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is cleansed before verification as necessary. The comprehensive lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is rigorously evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair label and the standards of ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair tests can trace drug consumption up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter timeframes of urine tests.
  • Resistant to tampering: Hair drug tests are notably difficult to cheat, providing more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It offers a usage history over time, beyond just recent intake.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing procedures.
  • Result fluctuations: Variables like hair coloring and individual growth differences can influence metabolite density in hair.

Notice: Although commonly named "hair follicle tests", the assessment focuses on the hair strand and excludes the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
